wiki 5 20/20 - good post. You made several good observations about it too. Did you think the skit needed some post-skit pastor add-on stuff or was it fine as it was?

Rachel Krauss, Bethany Lyons, and Corey Boucher did chapel this week. They were reading a script and acting out a scene that the Pastor had planned for them. I think Corey did a really good job. It was easy to hear him because he has a low voice, and low voices carry well and are easier to hear. His pronounciation could have been better however. Rachel Krauss did well with her pronounciation, however since she has such a high pitched and light voice, it was a little harder to hear her. Bethany was the same way, but she spoke well too. It was easy to follow the message because they all did a good job upflecting and downflecting to keep things interesting. They all held good poise and posture too. The message was kinda wierd, but since the speakers did so well, it was easy to follow. I didnt really get bored. I didnt notice them stuttering and I didnt notice any long pauses either.

wiki 4 - 20/20 - Nice posting! I am glad to hear someone see the good things Pastor C. does... he gets a lot of flack from some folks... sometimes I think it's more that they don't like chapel, rather than his speaking skills.

I havent ever really thought about it, but Pastor Clausing is a great public speaker. He speaks very clearly and we are always sure of what he is saying. He has great pronunciation. He uses hand gestures quite a bit to emphasize his point. This can be seen as good, but also maybe he over does it a little bit by using the same gesture repeatedly, maybe a little too much. He also kept going with his speech, though people were distracted by the bird in the gym. He probably did notice the bird flying, and the audience's focus shift to it, but he showed no evidence of noticing and kept going. He has good posture when he speaks also, he stands straight up. Its also pretty easy to follow his lesson. I actually recall always being interested in his lectures during school last year. He talks about pretty interesting things, or makes things seem interesting even when they really aren't, which he did a good job of in his speech this week. I think that Pastor Clausing is a great public speaker, and shows great enthusiasum, which is very important.

wiki 2 - 10/16  - 20/20 great observations

10/15

Today Mr. Kuhlman and the seniors of the football team did chapel. I think Mr. Kuhlman did a really good job with his speaking. He walked around, but not too much, too keep the listener focused and interested. Also, he didn't use words like "um" or "like" that I noticed. He did a really good job of telling a story. He upflected and downflected at the right times. The way he speaks keeps a listener focused on the story so it is easy to follow. I also think his eye contact was good, I noticed him looking all around the room, especially when he asked questions. I think this was a good technique. With all of these good speaking techniques, his message of talents came across easily. I think Kuhlman is a good public speaker overall. I think this is good because he is also a teacher, so its good that he keeps people interested. The other seniors didn't do that good of a job. Most of them appeared like they didn't care, and didn't show eye contact. Their voices were fairly monotone. They didn't show much enthusiasm. They didn't say "um" or "like", but I think this is because they were reading from a sheet word for word.

wiki 1  - 20/20 - great job - Glad to see someone be creative in their choices. A coach's pep talk or devotion is a good example!

Chris Mizel spoke to the cross country team on Wednsday. He did a devotion that lasted about 5 minutes. He has also done chapels at LHS. I have noticed that when he speaks, he repeats "ya know" a lot. I think this might distract people because they notice it. Also, his eye contact is not the greatest. He looks around, but never seems to really look people in the eye. He looks at the ground. Because he doesn't look us in the eye, we don't really look him in the eye and lose interest. I looked around and the team seemed to all be zoned out. However, he was very good with his pronounciation and speech. He wasnt standing very formally but I think this is ok because the situation wasn't very formal so this was somewhat appropriate. Chris gives a good message when you really focus on listening, but focusing is hard. I feel bad when chapel speakers are like this. People should be listening to their great message, but sometimes its hard to pay attention when the speaker doesn't keep us focused with good speaking skills.
