Robert Killen - Toastmasters 2008 District 7 Humorous Speech Contest
Robert Kilen did a good job acting as a father and a child in his speech. Robert Killen was very distinctive from when he was himself and when he was one of his three children. He showed alot of emotion. Each child or saying had a different look in his face. He reminded me actually of the vantriliquist Jeff Dunham who actually uses dummy's. He got my attention with the funny things kids would say. He did a real good job not forgeting any of his words of sayings. It looked like he had memorized the entire speech. Having three diferent charachters and bein himself and trying to keep everything organized must of took alot of practice. He also had alot of good pauses. I could tell when he was obviously switching from one of his kids back to himself. He had a good introduction, comparing how he couldn't compete in toastmasters, since he says 3 word phrases all the time. He used alot of hand gestures along with his facial expressions.
wiki 4 - 20/20 - good posting... I always feel sorry for best men... they get stuck with this big deal moment in a couple's life and many times, they are just a buddy of the groom and not really all that into speaking. This guy is a prime example!
10/30/2009 Worst Best man speech
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJJIs2BM1LE
This guy obviously tried to wing his best man speech, and failled pretty bad. Its sad if you have to announce that your the best man. He used the word "um" more times in a minute and half than our whole class in one day. He obiously had no outline, speech, or memorization of the best man speech at all. He couldn't come up with any sentance for fifteen seconds. He never did get a a real speech out there for the people. I dont think the audience even thought he was done with the speech. The only thing he said about was that he knew them for along time and they were happy. I think if you were the best man of a wedding you would have alot more to say than just that. I thouht he was looking down at the table because he might of had a speech or something to read off of, but it looks like he was just so embarassed, and nervous, he didn't want to look at anyone. He really didn't have much of a intro or conclusion to his speech.
Also.... I thought Austin Cantrell speech was really good, I drive a manual so I understood what he said.
wiki 3 - 20/20 - I am glad you got to see an entertainment speech... I think they are the most fun both to listen to and to give! Maybe you'll do one?
10/23/2009-April's Humorous Speech
I thought April's speech was good, because she used her body as her speech. Most of her speech made up of her expresions. It was funny, because she acted out everything she said. The whole speech was about herself, and she didn't stay next to the poidum for very long. She never lost train of thought while she acted out what she was saying. I thought it be really hard to try and act and say whats going on at the same exact time. She looked around the room alot, it looked like she mainly memorized most of the speech. She made the speech very entertaining because of things she cant do. She didn't get tied up with the people laughing, while she was doing her actions. I thought she was going to eventually end up in tears also, but she held herself to her speech the entire time. It seemed like most of the people there enjoyed her speech. I thought overall she did a good job with her speech, and she made it interesting by using things she cant do well at.
wiki 2 - 20/20 - good observations! I agree with you that he did a great job coping with the tech snafu!
10/16/2009 Mr Stec Chapel
I thought Mr. Stec did a good job with his speech in chapel. He used the three concepts we discussed in class well. He informed, pursuaded and entertained. He even had a malfunction and went on with chapel as if nothing was ever wrong. He memorized his speech and was flawless with his message. He moved and used contact the entire speech. I like how he didn't stay close to the podium and moved around the gym to get ahold of everyone. He even used a joke in the begining refering to what he heard to keep everyone interested. I like how he refered to previous messages during his speech and how he gave us an insight in his future speech. He used the bible to read the message and he put together the verse and his message very well.
wiki 1 20/20 - great response work!
10/09/2009 Ron Paul Speech
Ron Paul overall had a very good speech. Ron Paul, used questions as statements. He didn't put his own spin on his statements, but used questions to ask people what he really meant. He stayed interesting as he went along his speech. Ron Paul used his pauses in key times, and timed out looking at the people perfectly. He remained respectful to all parties. His whole speech was based off of what if's, and he did a good job to put together statements that all tapped into his final statement. Ron Paul stayed on point, and he used his time effectively. I didn't know you yield your time back if you are short of the time you ask. Ron Paul seemed get everybody to wonder about what if, by his range of statements he used. You don’t see many speeches with that sort of style, he really drilled the peoples mind with what if’s. People couldn’t get uninterested from his speech, because there could be a what if that makes you wonder the same. Ron Paul had good stance and used hand gestures effective to his speech. Ron Paul used controversial subjects and put them into what if’s statements, so he could get across what he was trying to say.

A Bad Experience
Have you ever planned the perfect weekend that turned out to be the opposite? I have, my name is John and three of my buddies, and one of their moms planned the perfect weekend. You see, Jarret, Jason, Ryan, and me, are pretty good bowlers, and for months we have been waiting for this weekend in April. We planned to bowl in the state tournament the 25th and 26th of April as a team.
Jason's mom, was considered our manger, she setup all the accommodations for us. Jason's mom, Grace Jones, enrolled us in to the tournament in December, she even booked a really nice hotel, so we thought. Grace, rented a 2009 Ford fusion to drive us all to St. Joseph, Missouri. As a group we practices every Saturday for the entire year until the weekend of the tournament arrived.
The perfect weekend finally arrives. Everybody's in the car, and all packed. We start to leave Saint Charles and then we realize thirty minutes away that ryan and Jason forgot there United States Bowling Congress bowling cards. You can't bowl in the tournament with out the U.S.B.C bowling cards. Instead of turning around, we decided to look for the nearest library on our route, so we could print the cards off the internet.
After driving hour after hour to get to St. Joseph, which is a six hour drive, we finally checked in to our hotel. This hotel had all kinds of cool amenities, such as a giant pool with a five story slide, a unique steak house,

huge rooms, and so much more. Once we checked in to the hotel, we went to our room. The room was in the smoking section, so it smelled horrible. There were to beds that were rock hard, and a ten year old television. The room wasn't what we expected.
Even with the bad start, we were so excited for the tournament the next day. We decided to try out the steak house at the hotel, and go practice bowling afterwards. The steakhouse was amazing, we all had steak and appetizers. When we were finished eating, it was nine-thirty PM, by the time we got to the bowling alley they had started cosmic bowling. The cosmic bowling was really fun. They had a strike prize, if you had a rack with a gold pin, and got a strike, you got to spin the wheel, and win a prize. All of us got a strike when the gold pin came up multiple times.
The next day we woke up and went to try this free buffet the hotel offered. The buffet consisted of cold eggs, toast, and milk. We decided to ditch the buffet and go grab breakfast somewhere on the main route. After breakfast, we went back to the hotel to check out the massive swimming complex. The massive swimming complex turned out to be monkey's kiddy cove, with a five story slide. The deepest pool there was three and a half feet deep.
We decided to go back to to our rooms and search in the directory for things to do around St. Joseph. We had a few hours to kill before our bowling tournament. We decided to to go mini-golfing at this place with three different courses. Mini-golfing was fun, who would know the worst player would end up winning a free game on the eighteenth hole.
Favignano 3
After mini-golfing, we went to the bowling alley to check in one hour prior to the start of the tournament. There was a squad of bowlers already in progress. We were ready for the tournament to begin, we already had celebration plans for afterward. We planned on going to this thrilling amusement park, World of Fun. After we were checked in, the officials informed us that the tournament was running an hour and a half behind. They were so far behind they didn't even oil any of the lanes that had finished yet. Oiling the lanes usually takes thirty minutes to an hour. We still had high hopes on going to World of Fun. The plan was to bowl fast, and get out by five-thirty PM. Our squad ended up not starting until five-thirty PM. There was slim chances of us making it to World of Fun, but we hadn't given up quite yet.
We finally started our first game of three. The first game was great. All of us bowled above two hundred. The second game, was the game that destroyed all hopes of going to World of Fun. Something broke in the machinery in the back of the lane. They said it would take forty-five minutes to fix. They also said, they didn't have the proper mechanic to fix the problem, and there were no lanes open to switch too. We had to wait nearly two hours before resuming bowling. We didn't bowl our best that game, but it was good enough to still get in first place. Our arms tighten up from waiting two hours. On top of all the waiting all that time, it started pouring down rain. Our hopes of going to World of Fun to celebrate was shattered.
We started our third game out great, all four of us got strikes in the first three frames. Jason and me ended up getting an award for seventy-five pins over average. Grace, kept all the scores for us. After adding our scores, and handicap, it looked like we won first place by over two hundred pins.
Favignano 4
We were so excited that we were over the fact that we couldn't go to World of Fun.
We went to turn in the score sheet to the officials so they could validate the scores. As they validated the scores, they found an error. Somehow, Grace managed to triple our handicap scores. We spent thirty minutes trying to figure out what we did wrong. The sheets the officials gave us, were different than the ones we were accustomed to using. We went from first place to fourteenth due to the error. The night was completely ruined. Not only did we not go to World of Fun, but we didn't get first place after we thought we had. It felt like a baseball game where the whole team comes out to congratulate the player who hit a homer, when they found out it was foul. We also didn't leave until nine-thirty PM.
We went back to our hotel to find out what kind places there were around there to get dinner. It was a long quiet dinner. After dinner, we went to the hotel room and hung out with some other bowlers. The next morning we were getting over what happen the day before. It was our final day of bowling, we had singles and doubles left. We ate breakfast, and headed straight to the bowling alley. We were all checked out of the hotel room, and ready to go home after bowling. We bowled six games really fast. We all did fair to poor. The lanes were not oiled from the night before.
We left the bowling alley, and start heading home. We go through Kansas and see World of Fun from the highway. At that moment, Grace turned around and looked at us. We all decided to go to World of Fun. We figured that we had to have some kind of enjoyment this weekend. We turned that car around, and enjoyed the rest of our day at World of Fun.
wiki 5 - Great job on your posts both this week and last. You have a lot of interesting ideas and I enjoy hearing them. Your list was pretty cool! I look forward to your story too!
Week Five
09/18/2009
I am over half way done with my creative story. I spent good use of my time during class to get a good start on the story. The biggest problem I was concerned about was that not many people know much about bowling, but after writing half the story it is very simple to follow. The story has alot of up and downs before reaching the climax. I think the story is going to turn out pretty decent in the end. I had to cut alot of extras out of the story to not make it confusing. I should be done with the story by Monday.

Week four
Why was it so important for TJ to do what he did at the end of the story.
09/11/2009
I think it was important for TJ to do what he did at the end of the story to show that he cared about his work. I think he would rather destroy his work himself than have some man who is going to destroy it one way or the other for him. I also thing it might have been a test to see if the kids he was with cared about him and his project as much as he did. I think TJ wanted I think TJ realize that he had to go home to be where he was meant to be at. I think TJ went back just because the people there all harvest like he does, and it is where he best fits.

How about the ending? Could it have REALISTICALLY ended any other ways?
I think the story had a perfect ending. I don’t think you could realistically end it any other way. If all the things hadn’t happen to Peter, than yes maybe the ending could have been different, but since that’s not the case, I don’t see any other way you could end the story. I think Joe would have been happy whether or not his “papa” was going to return. I think if Peter could have been more copasetic with the situation, than the story could have ended a different way. It would be interesting if there was a sequel to that story.

Great job on wiki 3!
This story is set in Northern Ireland at the height of the violence between Protestants and Catholics. What did you think about the level of violence in this one? Did it contribute to the realism of the tale or hurt it?
I didn't think the story was based on a large level of violence as I thought it would, but I think if you look at violence and compare it to the damage that occured than I would say it was a very high level of violence. The story did have parts that contributed to the realism of the tale, but I think it had a more in-depth look at the guy and what he exactly was doing. I thought he choose a pretty good move of droping the gun to make it look like he was dead. I thought that was a great strategy and contribution to the realism of the tale. I think it hurt the story because of the ending. I think because he killed his brother that it wasn't exactly what i though of a real Protestant verse Catholic war. I thought the story was good, because I had no clue that it was his brother he killed till it said so.

I think i've decided on what my project four short story is going to be about. The short story is going to be about four teenagers who bowl all year and prepare thereselves for the state bowling tournament. As they prepare themselves all year throught that year unfortunate events occur all the way up into the event and after. The story is going to be about how four people become a real tight group and help each other in trying to win the tournament. Without giving to much more away, It's going to be a story that keeps the reader in suspense or worried about the outcome. I'm going to enjoy writing it. One word of caution...a year is a LONG time span for a short story to cover, so consider that very carefully - you may need to do a lot of summative flashback sorts of things. I like the idea though~
Week Two
Good work on wiki 2! How's your project four going? I am curious which option you've chosen.

Your thoughts? Is it right or wrong for Mike to do what he does to (for?) his grandma
I don't think you should lie to your elders, but I think under the circumstance of mike that it is better to play along. Depending on what condition ones gradmother would be in at an nursing home would also change my descion on if what Mike did was right or wrong. Mikes grandma could of had an medical issue if mike would of told his grandmother that he wasn't Michael. His grandmother could of also totally forgot who Mike was if he told her he wasn't Michael and cause an ackward situation. It's better off to have his grandomother get off what she wanted to say now before she passed, so she has a clear conscience.

Who has the bigger problem? Charles or his mother?
I think Charles Mother has the biggest problem. The mother has to figure out a plan to discipline Laurie. The mother also is probably worried why Laurie would feel the need to have to make up a childs name and come home every day for 3 weeks and tell them about what this childs doing wrong when it is really Laurie. It could take alot of work such as therapy, to help her child. Her mother also has to explain to the teacher the situation, and how she wasn't aware of whatwas going on during school. The mother is going to have to be in touch with Laurie more often and keep track of what she is doing at all times.
Week One
I am going to give you full credit for this week - however, next week I expect to see you follow the assignment directions as they were given on the assignment sheet... you are to make TWO entries and each entry should be AT LEAST 100 words long. You did SEVEN entries and not one of them was over 50 words (some a LOT less!) So write in detail TWICE, not 7 times thinly... okay?
08/21/2009
Topics to consider:
Was Sammy a "winner" or a "loser" for making the choice he made in the story?
I think sammy was a winner because he choose his values over staying in the job because of family relations. Sammy used courage to stand up to his boss who had power. I dont think Sammy is considered a loser for quiting his job, or not getting the girls.
What parts of Updike's style did you like/dislike? Is this a "good" story?
I thought that Updike's style was good, because it constantly gave us one fact after another. I think the story had several meanings to the overall story. I thought the story was in good style, because It was an easy read, with a deeper meaning. It was a very philsophical story to think about.
Does defending someone to someone else only "matter" or "count" if the person you defend appreciates it or knows you did it?
You shouldn't defend somene if its for a reason to matter or count. You should defend someone if you think it will benifit them wether or not they know about it. I think he was ready to move on from his job before the girls came in. I think there might have been more upsetting information about his boss to take such a strong standpoint.
