Today Mr. Schkushlemen did chaple and he did an interisting speech. Today he talked to us, and the grandparents, about depression and the causes it has on people. One thing that i had heard about before is that if you have any erge to drink,  get all the bottles out of your house asap. 

     His aproach was pretty mellow and not that strong, though it was pretty straight forward. It made me really think about things that have been happening lately with my mom being in the hospital and everybody getting sick. Mr. S did have very good eye contact and you could tell that when he was tlaking about his wife it was really a hard time for him. I liked that he had some emotion mixed in with his sermon.

Today at chapel both Pastor Clausing and Mr. Flandermeyer both spoke. I think that Mr. F did better because his delivery was more straightforward, like he was trying to teach us about the subject of his speech.Mr. F had much better eye contact than PC did, it seemed like PC never looked up while he was reading us scripture from the bible. Both speakers were both talking about very serious subjects but mr F thought sbout his more because he wasnt just reading it from a book. You could also tell that Mr F practiced his more. PC only read from a book so there wasnt much to practice but he still kept his face buried in the bible and never looked up, not even after he had finished with the scripture reading. Mr. F also had a video that also helped him in his speech so it made everything easier to explain and talk about to other people.

wiki 3 - 18/20 - You need to focus a bit more on the DELIVERY of the speech and don't get caught up in the content or history of the speech. What exactly did he DO that made this speech strong. You said he expressed his beliefs in "such a way" - what do YOU mean when you say that???

     Today i looked up Martin Luther "I have a Dream" speech. I decided to use this speech because its a very powerful and well known speech that changed the corse in american history. This speech had a very big impact on the way people treated minorities. Martin Luther Kings style of speaking is very strong and straight forward. The way he talked to the people made them really agree with what he had to say and that got more people to agree with the way minorities were treated in America at the time.          

     Martin Luther King did very good in his speech. The way he conected with the people way very good and you could tell that his style of making a speech paid off becasue of all the people that he conected with in such a short period of time. Another reason he did so well is because he expressed his beliefs in such a way that really changed peoples outlook on the way racism can change peoples lives in a bad way.

SHORT STORY

            “Now what you’ll want to do when they try to bite you like that is just take the spear you made and…”

SLICE!

            “Just stab him in the head and he’ll die right away even though they don’t taste as good.”

            Henry was the host of a very popular survival show and did very good at hosting it. He was good at it because it was fake. Every show was staged somewhere out in the woods, or the mountains, or the desert. Then one day, this happened…

            “That was just disgusting!” Said Henry after he speared through the head of the fish. “Why do I always have to eat something raw or drink my own pee every show?”

            “Well, it is what they viewers want to see. They like to see you in the worst scenarios imaginable, even though nobody ever has to do any of the crap you do in the show.” Explained Henry’s manager, Keith.

            “You know, Keith, I would never do this stuff if I wasn’t getting paid. Even if my life depended on it.”

            As Henry and Keith laughed they boarded the plane to go back to Los Angeles.

“We are about to take off so everyone should be seated and buckle up.” The engines started and the airplane started to take off. “We are about 14 hours from our destination.” Announced the pilot over the loud speaker.

            Out of nowhere the plane started to shake. “Every things ok, everyone, just a little turbulence.  Nothing to worry about.”

            “Nothing to worry about…” thought Henry, “I think I’ll just take a nap.”

Henry woke to the violent shaking of the airplane. “Just some more turbulence, again, nothing to worry about.”

            “OK,I guess I’ll go back to sleep.” Henry said to himself.

            Then the plane shook more violently than it had ever before. Henry and Keith both fell off their seats and onto the floor then the air-bags fell from the ceiling. “Everyone, one of the engines blew and we are having problems with our computers and our navigation systems are not giving correct coordinates. If you would just stay calm and out on the air-masks this will all just blow over in a bit.”

            Henry shot up onto his seat and grabbed the mask and put it on. Then a suitcase filled with camera gear fell out of its place and hit him square on the head and Henry was out cold.

            What seemed like hours later he woke up to see flames rising out of what used to be an air plane. Then he got up and started looking for people, there was no one to be found.  

            “Where am I?  Where is every one else?” said Henry in a very distressed tone.

            About ten yards from him was his bag that he uses in the show and some food that made it out of the plane.

            “Boy am I lucky… what are the chances of that? Looks like I’ll have to find my way out of here.” Thought Henry as he grabbed the bag and the food and tried to find his way to civilization.

            What Henry didn’t know is that he was in the middle of the Great Sandy Desert, which was the second largest desert in Australia, and he would have to find his way out alone.

            Henry looked at his watch, 6:34, he had been walking for 11 hours and still had seen no sign of humanity and he had already eaten the small bag of cheezits and the 3 bagels that he had found by the plane. “I guess I’m sleeping outside tonight.” Thought Henry. He went over to some rocks and plopped down in between two of the rocks and fell asleep right away.            

            Henry woke up to something tickling his side. When he looked down he saw the biggest scorpion he had ever seen.

            “Oh my god! Aaahhhhh!” screamed Henry and got up smacking himself to get anything else off that might be crawling around his body. Then he looked at his watch, 8:52, “I gotta find some shelter…”

            Then he saw a big rock that was leaning over on top of another rock.  Then he remembered the show. The next morning Henry woke up to a nice warm fire and a roof over his head. “That wasn’t so bad.”

            Henry looked down at his watch after a couple hours of walking, 9:22 am. Then he heard a growling noise and looked up. It could have been anything, he kept walking but was more aware of things now. A couple minutes he heard the growling sound again. “What in the world is that sound?” then he looked down and realized that it was his stomach, he had been so wrapped up in finding civilization that he didn’t even realize that he was starving and that there was a big gash on his head.

            “I’m really hungry… I wish I didn’t eat all the food.”

            Then he looked ahead and saw a mound of dirt with a big opening on the side. Henry went over to the mound and stuck his hand in there to try to grab something, and felt around. There was nothing in there he thought then…

            “OWW!!! Something bit me!”

            Henry pulled out his hand and his middle finger was covered in blood.

            “that was a very dumb idea” he thought to himself and kept on walking.

            12:15 pm. It had been almost a day since Henry had something to drink and he was staring to feel the effects of his lack of fluids. Then he thought about the show and what he did when he was “thirsty” on the show. In the show he would act like he was peeing into something and then drank it, even thought it was really apple juice.

            A few minutes had passed and something entered his brain, he had a water bottle in his bag. Henry opened the bag, pulled out the bottle then unzipped his pants.

            “Just relax”

            After Henry finished, he held the bottle up to his nose and smelled it, and gagged.

            “Pretend its apple juice” Henry said to himself trying to convince himself to drink the bottle. Then he plugged his nose and took a big swig, then another, and another, until all the liquid in the bottle was gone.

            While Henry was sitting on the ground trying not to vomit he saw something out of the corner of his eye. A hare just ran into some bushes.

            “Your mine…”

            Henry found a long stick and tied his knife to the end of it then snuck over to the bush as quietly as he could. Then, he stabbed violently into the bush until he stabbed something. When he pulled the spear out there was a very small hare on the other end.

            It had been a day and a half since Henry had eaten anything, so he spent hours looking for enough timber to build a fire and all he could muster up was a few wimpy twigs and the long branch he made the spear out of.

            “This is not enough to make a good enough fire to cook a rabbit.”

            Then he thought of the show again and remembered an episode where he ate a raw fish, even though the fish was bought from a sushi market.

            “Whats the worst thing that could happen?”

            He took one big bite. And another, and another. The taste of  an hour old raw hare resembled the smell of a week old raw hare. After 4 bites of raw rodent henry had to stop.

            “This is nothing like the TV show.”

            After hours of feeling terrible Henry started to throw up non stop and collapsed.

10:47 pm

            Days later Henry woke up in a hospital with really bad food poisoning and second degree sun burns all over his body.

            “Your awake, your showing improvements.” Said a man standing in the doorway. “You were very sick. You lost 23 pounds and slept for 3 days straight.”

            Henry was silent, he didn’t know what to do in a situation like this.

            “That gash in your forehead was infected also and needed 10 stiches. You were very lucky to survive a crash like that.”

            Henry was in the hospital for 8 days. While he was in there he had been informed that there was a small town 3 miles in the opposite direction that had decided to go.

            After his crazy experience Henry decided to stop making the survival show and started his own search and rescue crew in the Great Sandy Desert.

So is it always true that "what goes around comes around"? Or is there a lot more than meets the eye in this interesting little tale?

I think that there is more in this story that meets the eye.  I think that beacause he is a kid who really had no friends and he thinks the only way he can make friends is to play with them and include himself in any way possible. When he starts to wail on the new kid he thinks that if he beats the crap out of him people will start to think he was cool and then want to be his friend. But it's also true that what comes around goes around because he starts to treat the new kid the same way the other kids ,like Eddie, were treating him in the begnning of the story.

Week 4

4. When and how was prejudice confronted in this one?

Prejudice was in this  one thorughout almost the whole story. They acted prejudice towards him because he was new and a little diffrent. They didnt want to play or hangout with him becasue they thought that he was weird at first. But by the end when they manke the garden on the roof of the building they like him becasue he is pretty fun to be around so they start treating him better.

When or how will Mike know it is time to regrow his moustache?

He will know when to regrow his stache when he is older and is more responsible. When he is old enough to grow it he will know and then when he does gro it back he will have a better understanding on life and love and everything that is going on in the world and why things are going on and why they happen. It all comes down to how mature he gets because if he's not mature he wouldnt want to grow the moustache back because its a symbol. 

Would you consider what Mike did an act of deception? Is he lying or not?

Was Sammy a "winner" or a "loser" for making the choice he made in the story?

I think that sammy was a loser because he didnt get the girl, he didnt talk to the girl, he didnt have a job at the end of the story and his parents got mad at him for quitting. but i think that he is a winner because he stood up for what he thought was right and that took alot of guts to do.

Does defending someone to someone else only "matter" or "count" if the person you defend appreciates it or knows you did it?

I think that it does matter when you stand up for someone because you should always do whats right. When the girls were being mistreated because of what they were wearing and their age is not much difffrent from if the old lady from the begining came into the store with a bikini on. He quit his job because of the way the manager was treating them and he did not want to work for some guy who treats people like that and that was a very right thing to do because he will always be like that and he will be a good person later in life when he gets a real job
