       "Life is a Book"

White as snow.

Fluffy as cotton.

Flows gracefully in the wind.

Elegant as an orchid.

As she stands there. Tall.

With a cream peach reflection.

Rosy checks. Blushing.

Hair as a goddess.

Dark as the night sky

But shimmers as the stars.

Butterflies in her stomach.

Moving around like Irish Dancers.

Is it excitement? Or just nerves?

It's all about to begin.

Her dad's waiting. Ready to walk her down.

She takes his hand. Just as she did when he first held her.

The grand doors open as if showing her the new chapter in her life.

The room is packed full. However she doesn't notice.

She walks down the aisle. Ready to say her vows.

One last thing she must do and that is to close her last chapter.

        “Deciding my life”

How can I escape from this all?

From the feeling of lose, hopelessness.

That empty feeling in your stomach, like it was flipped inside out.

Feeling the stress, like thousands of bricks on my chest.

How do you choose the rest of your life?

Afraid to take that leap off the edge and dive head first into the sea.

The sea of adulthood.

We’re just kids, still vulnerable.

Like the skin of peaches, any little touch can bruise us.

Expected to achieve the most out of life

Riding the train of success, but not knowing when it can go off course

It worries me not to know the unkown

Taking chances. But in the end it will come around.

For the worse? Or for the better? We will not know.

How will you choose the rest of your life?

First you may see Dark Blue

Quiet. Calm.

Relaxing. Peaceful.

Blue keeps me content; When nothing else could be worse.

The other side is Cherry Red

Happy. Vivacious.

Daring. Courages.

Prepared to take on anything; Together I am strongest.

wiki 5 - 0/20 no post for 11/6 - first, you posted this a day late, second, you didn't discuss any new speakers in it, just answered my question and then speculated... sorry, but that's not the assignment.. even though I am glad you answered my question.

Wiki 5:

The bird in chapel. Yes I found that to be pretty destracting. Anything thats moving or destracting when it's not involved with what is being presented to you will take your focus away from that individual. And I'm pretty sure over half of the students, and assuming many of the adults as well, lost focus to the message on account for that bird. However, Pastor Clausing's sermon was pretty interesting so he did a great job as to keeping us attentive, helping us not to lose that focus. Not to many other guest speakers could havd probably kept our attention during that, many of our guest speakers cant keep our attention period. I say speakers now compared to speakers from long time ago presents themselves totally differently. Now, they use many more electrionics, such as the computer, powerpoints, images, movies. Compared to when it would just be a person up in front speaking to you. The audience has changed greatly and expect so much more now than we use to. We expect something fun and exciting, not just all listening. So now I wonder, what will public speaking be like in the future?

wiki 4 - 20/20 - Good post. Actually, I think Pastor C prepares a fresh sermon every time he preaches... which sometimes is up to 2x's per week. What about the bird? Did it bother you?

Wiki 4:

Oct. 25-30

The speaker I chose to review is Pastor Clausing. Pastor Clausing, considering he's a Pastor, sticks to the script. Unlike Mr. Stec, who doesn't preach every week and probably hasn't done the same message more than once, Pastor Clausing probably has done this message multiple times. However he does an excellent job from staying away from acting "robotic". He must add a new touch here and there once in a while to spice it back up. He also uses appropiate hand gestures, not over done or over worked. And he usually has some sort of powerpoint, whether from a picture or just a saying, makes his sermons more interesting. And once in a while he'll add a little "humor", appropiate of course for the topic at hand which helps us stay focus, because sermons aren't exactly that interesting. All in all Pastor Clausing does an excellent job at presenting himself.

wiki 3 - 0/20 - no post this week.

wiki 2 - 20/20 - considering he had trouble with his visual aids today... he did quite well. Did you get any ideas about that?

Oct. 12-17.

The speaker I chose to review is Mr. Stec. Mr. Stec put on our chapel today. The way he presents his imformation he does it in an energetic way. Which that can be a advantage and disadvantage. An advantage is that he keeps us focused on what he's doing. However, we all more focused on his movements rather than what he's saying. But he makes sure he looks up at us and walks around, doesn't seem like he's reading to us. He also uses alot of visuals in chapel, such as power points, videos, and him himself can be considered a visual. And again, visuals help us take on track and it mixes things up a bit other than just the normal talking. He is a great speaker, tries new things but from time to time can be overly dramatic with his motions.

wiki 1 20/20 - great response work!

Oct. 4-9

The speaker I chose to review is the Pastor at my church, Pastor Auringer. Pastor Auringer, compared to the other many Pastors I've listened to, is an excellence speaker. He's younger, mid-30's, so his sermons are more open to us younger group, keeping us more tenative. Older Pastors tend to lean out to adults, you know the long, dreading sermons that make you fall asleep. Auringer keeps me interested in what he's teaching us. His tone of voice makes it exciting, good pauses when necessary, use of language, hand gestures. Auringer is partly deaf and how he presents himself due to that fact is wonderful. He also references sports, however not during the speach, but afterwards and that's always a big hit for guys. Auringer being a Pastor has to be a stong speaker because he has the most important part, teaching us about God, by keeping us focused and he always gets that measure across.

Jealousy Hits

I love weddings! I remember when I was a little girl, I would always put on pretend weddings by dressing up and making my cousin, Jack be my groom. I pictured everything, how my cake was going to look and my hair and dress, it was gorgeous! It is every girls dream to have that spectacular wedding, you know, the wedding of your dreams.  However, in this case it’s not my wedding but my older sisters. Either way, I still look at it as my chance to add in my dream details that I’ve been thinking up for years.

I remember the day my sisters boyfriend Collin, now fiancé, came over to our house to ask for permission. My sister at the time didn’t have a clue as to what was going on, as she was still at school up in Wisconsin. He called me early one morning asking if he can come over later that day, I didn’t see the problem in it, except for I found it rather odd that he wanted to come over when Reagan was still at school. But I told him to come on over and he arrived shortly after his call and made himself at home. And as you know, when the boy of the girl asks her parents for her hand in marriage, both parents should be present, when he arrived my mom was at work. He waited five hours for her to get home by sitting on the couch and watching football with my dad, I applaud him for that for my dad is not the talkative kind of guy.

Once my mom arrived home, they proceeded into the piano room (I assumed for the privacy) and there he asked them the big question. My parents, of course, gave him permission to marry my sister. He told them every detail as to how and when he was going to propose, he even had the exact time! For my sister was coming home for a visit in a few weeks so my whole family’s excitement grew stronger each day, this has been the hardest secret I ever had to keep!

The day the proposal was going to happen I had to work, I was so anxious; I wasn’t sure whether or not they would give me a call or come and see me. But sure enough, not an hour after he asked her I see them heading towards me, I run outside to meet them, first I give them both a huge hug then I grab her hand, I had to see the ring. It was beautiful, silver with a big diamond in the middle and smaller ones running down the side, I have to admit I was a little jealous.

A few days later my sister asked me the question I’ve been waiting to hear since their engagement, and that was “Will you be my Maid of Honor?” At that moment I felt so special and loved that she wanted me, of all people, to be her Maid of Honor. It was a definite yes.

The wedding planning felt like it took forever. The easy issues were buying the wedding dress, bridesmaids dresses, location of wedding/reception, and tuxes. The big issues were all the little tiny details, such as how to decorate the church, flowers and where and who should have them. It started to become very tedious for me, and it’s not even my wedding. Now I understand why they can be very stressful.

It seemed as if the wedding was all my family could talk about. Whenever we had family gatherings, Reagan and Collin were the main event. Now don’t get me wrong I was more than thrilled for them, but I would have loved a little attention.

My High School graduation was coming up right around the corner and there was still so much left for me to do. I had to collect all of my college applications together and start to decide on which school I should attend, as well as planning my sisters’ bachelor party. I felt no support from my family and that the whole world was resting on my shoulders.

With all the stress I have been going through and the disappointment with my family, my whole attitude changed. I showed no interest, whatsoever in helping with the wedding, I started to dread it. When my sister became engaged I didn’t think about how much time and effort it required from everyone else. Am I being selfish?

Their wedding was only a week after my graduation and the closer we came upon my time the more focus they were on wedding excitement. The day of my graduation my whole family came and as I walked across the stage to receive my diploma, I could hear them cheering. Right then, I put all matters aside and became truly happy for my sister and in the end it was all worth it.

She had a summer wedding up North in Wisconsin. Everything turned out perfect. Her dress, strapless and white with beading going down the front, her hair up with her long veil covering up her face, she looked stunning. We bridesmaids had short strapless dresses in cornflower blue each holding peach and green flowers, and as for the men, in their tuxes and bowties, they all look extremely handsome. Their bowties were really what pulled their look together.

There was just one major job of mine left I had to do, and that was my speech. My heart started pounding in my chest, my mouth became very dry. I couldn’t think straight with all the nerves I had, but before I knew it, it was time to give my toast:

“Hello everyone! For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Reagan’s younger sister Abbey. We are all gathered here today to celebrate the union of my older sis to her Prince Charming, Collin. I can’t think of anyone better off suited for my sister. Reagan, you’re such a loving, generous person with a good heart and you found your perfect half. The day you told me you had a boyfriend, I was shocked! Now don’t take that the wrong way, it wasn’t because I didn’t think you would ever have one, since he is and will be you first boyfriend ever! But the fact that he asked you out like ten times and every time you said you wanted to “get to know him better”. Collin, you have great patience, I’ll give you that. But I couldn’t be happier for you two. Reagan, you have been the best big sister I could have ever asked for. And Collin, you seriously are the brother I never had and my family’s lucky to have you in it. So now, I want to wish my lovely sis, Reagan and her Prince Charming the very best “happily ever after” a girl could ever dream of. “

wiki 5- nice work. I enjoy your honesty and you fresh ideas! You've done a great job this unit.

Sept. 14-18

Would YOU want to live in a family that kept "secrets" from one another the way the Hawley family did?

NO. If I had a family member that was about to die I would want to know right away as well as letting that person know too about their condidtion. If I came down with a life threatening sickness I would like to be informed so I can go out and do my "bucket list", things I've never done before that are just crazy. Also it'd give me a chance to go and spend whatever remaining time I have left with the people that mean the most to me. If nobody told me I wouldn't be given that chance and that just wouldn't be fair to me. Whoever would keep something that important from someone else are just being selfish. They're not telling the other person because then it's for real, maybe they're thinking if we don't tell them and keep it as the big elephant in the room it will just go away.

To those of you who know Langston Hughes predominantly as a poet, he was also a playwright, novelist, and songwriter! Pretty multi-talented. Give some thought to his style here... he does write almost poetically about a rather harsh and ironic situation. Can you see the irony? Who really loses when prejudice seems to win?

Langston Hughes story shows how the world judges us all on appearance. There are many ways we all can be judged, our beliefs, where we live and how we live, skin color, how you dress, act, plus many more. But thats how the world is and Hughes shows us just how cruel we can be to one another just by judging someone especially if that person can't control what they're being judged on.

The school that turned her down because of her skin color lost a very talented student. They picked her work because it was the best that they've seen however once they found out she was black they took away her scholarship. Doing that they lost the best artist amongest them all, having her represent her talent at another school, building up their reputation. So in this case they lost, they lost a girl who would have been a great addition to their school.

Sept 7- 11

1.  Want you to tell me if TJ is someone you "get" or not.

2.  If you can, explain why Deal gave it the title he did.

3.  Why was it so important for TJ to do what he did at the end of the story?

4. When and how was prejudice confronted in this one?

1.    TJ comes from the South, he is a farming boy and farming is all he knows how to do. There's nothing he knows more about. So when he mets up with the "gang" none of them know squat about farming when he knows everything. He has the confidence  and leadership to tell the others what to do and how to do it. He made farming sound fun and exciting because he showed so much enthusim as he was explaining to the boys on what it is.  He showed his determination and committment to it everyday, giving the gang that exact same feeling making them one hundred percent committed as well. He's a simple boy living in a simple place.

2     Antaeus gained his strength when his feet are planted flat on the ground. He says in the book "I looked at TJ then, knowing in a faint way the hunger within him through the toilsome winter months, knowing the dream that lay behind his plan. He was a new Antaeus, preparing his own bed of strength." What Deal is telling us TJ's strength is farming, farming to TJ is Antaeus ground. When he has his garden all grown he feels proud and he cares for it, he's the happiest he can be and nothing can take that happiness away from him. So when the men were going to destroy he had to do it himself because he wasn't going to let someone else take his own strength away. Once he did destroy it himself he had nothing left and he ended up running away, going back home to the South because he had nothing to look forward to where he was.

3.     It was important to TJ to clear his garden himself than having the adults do it because that garden was his, his "strength", and he wasn't going to have someone else destroy his strength.

Does this story fall more into the category of horror... or into the category of sci-fi? How do you think it stacks up compared to the original by Poe? Is it better or not as good? Why?

It falls more under the category of horror and sci-fi, just as the Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. However both were hard readings and difficult to understand. He starts off by describing the day as dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low. His choice of words so far are dark, he also uses dreariness, oppression, uneasy, and says there is always a minority afraid of something wether it's the dark, the future, past, present, or even themselves. As for Sci-fi, the fact that since Garret died because he didn't read, that is whats odd. He should have respected them and done what they said. But instead of rading the books he burned them, in the end not being able to know what was going to happen in the future.

Aug 31- Sept 4

What do you think about the premise of the future which said "Every man must face reality." (p.111) thus saying that man is "better off" without fantasy, imagination, and fiction. Do you agree or disagree?

Reality is life, without reality you have no life. You can't advoid it and everyone will face it sooner or later in the near future and mostly likely more than once. I enjoy reading books on reality because they are easier to relate to making them easier to understand. And is man "better off" without fantasy, imagination, and fiction? No, just as reality is life, fantasy, imagination, and fiction make your life less boring. These things help you escape from the reality of your life and let you relax. Plus everyone has an imagination so no matter how bad their reality life is they can imagine a life better, the way they dream of it to be.

August 24-29

On a deeper level, is there more to say about what's happening in this story besides the futility of a girl's crush on an obviously unattainable guy? Why do girls DO this to themselves??

Every girl loves to feel pretty. So obviously when a guy hints that he's interested in a girl that girl will kind of "fall" for him, especially if they find him very attracting. It seems as if once a girls in a relationship there can't be any other guy in the world for them. When a guy tells a girl that they "will call them later", us girls take that literally. We expect that guy to call, why else would they tell us that then? However guys will pretty much tell a girl anything they want to hear, to make them happy. That is the difference between guys and girls, girls are sensitive so when they don't get that call from that certain boy, they may think that they did something wrong or the way they look or their personality. Guys on the other hand can care less, brush it off their shoulders, probably not even remembering the girl they went out with. All in all girls are just more committed than guys tend to be.

August 24-29

So what do you all think of this one? What's the "life adjustment" here?

There were two big life adjustments here. The first one was a moms little boy is all grown up, heading off to kindergarten. She says "The day my son Laurie started kindergarten he renounced corduroy overalls with bibs and bagan weariing blue jeans with a belt...seeing clearly that an era of my life was ended, my sweet-voiced nursery-school tot replaced by a long-trousered, swaggering character.' A mother talking about how her sweet little boy, however thats how she sees him. As her son comes home everyday for lunch he has story after story about a boy in his class named "Charles" who always seems to start trouble. As he is telling his mom about Charles his mother seems to go alone with him, saying how bad of a boy Charles was. Once she goes to the PTA meeting and confronts the teacher about Charles she learns that Charles was her son who has been acting up. From what I hear and see, all moms want to think that their childs an angel, that they are perfect. That is exactly how this mother is, she needs to stop treating her child as a little boy and take responsibility for hers sons actions.

Good job on Wiki 2! Lots of details in your responses. I enjoy that! How's your idea for project #4 coming along?

August 16-21

Now the really fun question: Should Grannies go about giving little kids sticks and sending them out to "battle" other kids??? (personally, I am a granny... so I am very curious as to your advice on this!) :-)

When the grandmother gave her grandson the broomstick she knew that he wouldn’t have to use it against the other boys. She knew by the time he attempted to go back out that the other boys would have gone home for dinner, however, giving her grandson the broomstick helped build up his self-esteem. A grandmother, already raised her kids knows best. After raising kids of her own she knows from past experiences what works best and in this situation helping him to handle the problem and by giving him courage gave him the self-confidence that he needed to face his fears.

August 16-21

While the character Scratchy was technically the "antagonist" in this, he was also meant to be a rather humorous one. What did you pick up in the style and diction that Crane chose that became hints that he was trying to make Scratchy more funny than frightening?

Once Scratchy makes his appearance in town he is ready for a gun fight. One will most likely gain the expression that he is just bored, has nothing better to do and has fun by playing with his imagination.  When he sees that no one is in town to play with, he takes a piece of paper and pins it up on the door of the saloon and uses it as a shooting target. When he sees that Jack Potter and his wife are in town, Scratchy accuses him of trying to sneak up on him and warns him not to take out his gun. Potter says he has no gun and Scratchy doesn’t believe him, saying “Don’t take me for no kid”. Potter responses with saying he has no gun and that he is married and when Scratchy heard that news about his wife he simply turns around, dragging his feet as he walked away.

Good job on wk.1
